What makes handmade rugs so special?

We live in a time when almost everything can be made faster, produced in larger quantities and replicated almost exactly. Machines are making production easier and mass manufacturing has made products more accessible than ever. In fact, artificial intelligence is changing the way products are made.

So, in a world dominated by mass production, why handmade?

Maybe it starts out with something very simple that is time. Making a handmade rug isn't a one-step process. It moves through a series of steps, from developing the design and selecting colours to choosing materials, creating a graph, hand carding, hand spinning, dyeing, plying, weaving, washing, stretching, finishing and carefully checking the final piece. Each step needs attention, skill and experience. And unlike a machine-made piece designed to reproduce the same piece repeatedly, no two handmade rugs are ever quite the same. There could be a slight variation in some tiny details by artisans, in texture, and the way a
color settles.

The materials really do count as well. Different materials such as Tibetan Wool, Bamboo Silk, Chinese Silk and other natural fibres have their own texture, qualities, and the way they react to each process can shape how the final rug looks and feels. Then there are the artisans. Understanding these qualities and knowing how to work with them are part of the skill of artisans. Their expertise and a group of individual decisions shape the final design, which eventually becomes a finished piece.

This is also why even when two rugs begin with the same design, they may not end up looking completely identical. But in mass production, consistency is often the goal. However, in handmade rugs, these small variations are reminders that the piece was made by people, with a soul of its own.

And perhaps this matters more today than ever.

Because, we are surrounded by products made to be produced quickly, replaced easily and consumed repeatedly. Where handmade rugs carry an entire journey that cannot be replicated. Also, it is not special simply because a person made it instead of a machine. A handmade rug is special because in a world increasingly shaped by automation and mass production, owning something handmade is almost an act of defiance.
